Rio Lagartos and Ek Balam

This is not our first vacation to Mexico, but the first time we blogged it. Every new bird that we saw on this trip is a Life Bird for us. On the second day, 17 October 2006, we saw the Northern Jacana (Jacana spinosa), a kind of two colored moorhen, wading in the mud.

We visited the small fishing village of Rio Lagartos on the coast. Here we saw the unmistakeable Groove Billed Ani (Crotophaga sulcirostris) in the jungle there. It uses its huge beak to open fruit in the jungle.

On the way back to the hotel, we stopped at the nearby ruins of Ek Balam. Deep in the underbrush Berry spotted the Altamira Oriole (Icterus gularis). This bird was easy to see, because it is a very bright bird in the dark underbrush. We saw the female, which is bright orange.

We went back to our cute little hotel in Valladolid and ate in the restaurant there. Valladolid is a real Mayan city. Everyone there has beautifully brown skin and some wear the traditional Mayan robes. This vacation was a birding trip, sure, but the cultural adventure was equally as profound.
