This is an account of our 2006 birding trip to the Yucatan peninsula and Chiapas. We flew into Cancun. It was crowded with tourists, so we quickly rented a car (a PT Cruiser with no suspension), bought perishable goods in a grocery store and immediately hit the road. There was a Magnificent Frigatebird (Fregata magnificens) soaring quietly above this coastal city. The highway out of town was very modern, but right next to the road started the densest undergrowth. We followed our plan to drive to Valladolid, the regional capital city of Quitana Roo.
We made a kind of base in the small town of Valladolid, in a cute little hotel with a restaurant, Hotel Maria de la Luz.
Our room was quaint. The directions in English for the air conditioner in the room were backwards. Off was On and On was Off. Whoever installed it had spoken no English.
